Hints & Tips

This is a small collection of hopefully helpful ideas/solutions that have been collected from various people, including Dental Surgeons.  If you think this page is a good idea why not send in your hints & tips.  They can be on anything such as products, procedures, how to cope with patients or even how you make it through the day!  If there is enough interest I will categorize the tips and you decide whether you want to add your name.  We might even offer prizes for the best ones.  Equally if you disagree with any of the ideas let us know.  The more input there is the better chance of making a worthwhile knowledge base.  To send in your hints or comments click here.

When you take a Full impression you can check the accuracy by after removing the impression replace it and try to remove it again.  If there is suction the denture should also have suction.  If there is no suction the denture will probably not have suction and it may be worthwhile retaking the impression.

To ensure a good fitting denture do the try-in on an acrylic base, possibly with a Visco-Gel wash if very undercut.  If the try-in is stable and retentive the denture should be also.  If not a new impression, or a wash in the acrylic base, is required.

To maximise the use of undercuts the denture can be selectively soft lined into the undercut areas.  This enables full use of virtually any undercut maximising retention.

To cut down re-try’s if the first impression is difficult to take do not have the bite blocks made until after the secondary special tray impression has been taken.  It is almost impossible to accurately locate the bite blocks made on the primary impression onto the new impression in such circumstances.

Visco-Gel is a very accurate and stable material for wash impressions.  It bonds very well to virtually any surface and is especially good when the wash is thin.  To use it for such purposes it needs to be mixed thicker than recommended, more like a paste; it is then left in the mouth for ten minutes.  After removal it should be placed in cold water to finish setting for a further ten minutes or until it is no longer tacky.  Do not wrap or cover until the tackiness has gone and it is fully set.  Once set it is very stable.

One reason for gagging and speech problems with a new denture is that the post dam area is too thick or pronounced.  It is worth thinning down this area as a first step to try and alleviate the problem.

Discolouration of Gold/Metal in the mouth can be caused by a number of things such as diet, medication etc.  However, having a mixture of metals in the mouth such as amalgam, precious and semi-precious metals can also cause it.  In cases such as this the saliva can act as an electrical conductor and discolour by electro polishing.

For accurate positioning of the anterior teeth on a F/- use an Alma gauge, available from Schottlander or through us.  This enables you to find the dimensions, such as face height, of the existing denture.  This information can then be supplied to us, along with any changes, and we can then easily make the Bite or Try-in to the correct dimensions.

A tip, or rather a plea, from ourselves.  Sectional crown & bridge impressions are very difficult to work with and are often not very accurate when trying to locate the bite.  As far as possible we request full arch upper and lower impressions for all crown & bridge work.  The small extra time needed during impression taking will potentially save much longer at the fit stage.
